ATYRAU, Kazakhstan. Oct 10 (Interfax) - A man in Kazakhstan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with the confiscation of personal property for alleged terrorist activities.
Aidos Kusanov was found guilty by a court in Atyrau on charges of terrorism, financing extremist activities and illegal possession of arms, Gulfairuz Kusaliyeva, an assistant to the city prosecutor, told Interfax on Wednesday.
According to court papers, Kusanov is a follower of the Salafi Islamic movement and when he was in the city of Aktobe in the autumn of 2010, he received 380,000 tenge (150.38 tenge to the U.S. dollar) from a fellow Muslim to fund a militant group in Pakistan that was called Kazakh Islamic Jamaat.
He was ordered to pass the money to a member of the alleged Aktobe-based terrorist group Zhamagat Ansaru-d-Din in order to have the cash forwarded to Pakistan.
Kazakh Islamic Jamaat is the former name of a branch of Jund al-Khilafah (Soldiers of the Caliphate), an international militant group that is prohibited from pursuing any activities in Kazakhstan under an order by the Atyrau City Court dated November 25, 2011.
