Georgia cuts electricity exports 39.5% in Jan-Sept

TBILISI. Oct 17 (Interfax) - Georgia exported 532.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity in January-September 2012, down 39.5% on the same period of 2011, Georgia's Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO) told Interfax.

Most electricity exports went to Russia at 373.2 million kilowatt hours (70.1% of the total), ESCO said. Georgia exported 79 million kilowatt hours to Turkey, 67.9 million to Armenia and 11.8 million to Azerbaijan.

Electricity imports surged 94.4% to 444.5 million kilowatt hours. Georgia bought 346.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity from Russia (82% of total imports). The rest was imported from Azerbaijan - 97.9 million kilowatt hours.

Electricity production in Georgia fell 3.9% year-on-year to 7.36 billion kilowatt hours.

Georgia exported 930.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity in 2011 (down 38.9% on 2010) and imported 470.9 million (up 110%).
