Russia urges settlement based on special status of Transdniestria within united Moldova - Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. Oct 17 (Interfax) - Moscow respects Moldova's sovereignty and integrity and calls for a special status for Transdniestria, the Russian Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department said in a commentary published on the ministry Web site on Wednesday.
"The principled position of Russia is unwavering: it invariably respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and the neutral status declared by its constitution. Based on this, Moscow calls for a lasting and all-inclusive political settlement, which will guarantee a special status for Transdniestria," the commentary said.
The ministry expressed the certainty that "only Chisinau and Tiraspol could solve the problem themselves. The international community, including Russia, will help the settlement process and respect their decision."
