Assad is guarantor of ethnic minority rights and still enjoys considerable support among Syrians - Lavrov
MOSCOW. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Syrian President Bashar Assad is a guarantor of the rights of ethnic minorities in Syria and he still has support from a considerable number of Syrians, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.
"Bashar Assad is the guarantor of the rights of ethnic minorities who have been living in Syria for centuries, Christians included," Lavrov said in an interview with the Rossiiskaya Gazeta.
"Even by the most conservative estimates spelled out by our West European partners during confidential contacts, at least one-third of the Syrian population continues to support him as a man who can prevent Syria from turning into a state where ethnic minorities will be unable to exist," he added.
