Three sentenced in Kazakhstan for plotting to blow up police station

AKTOBE. Oct 23 (Interfax) - A court in Kazakhstan's Aktyubinsk region has given lengthy prison terms to three people, aged 19 to 28, who were convicted of plotting to blow up a police station building.

Zhasulan Abbasov was sentenced to 11 years in prison, Arman Kushanov to eight years, and Malik Tleulin to six years after the court found them guilty of promoting terrorism, establishing a terrorist group, illegally carrying weapons and explosives, making weapons, as well as stealing ammunition, weapons and their parts, the court said in a statement on Tuesday.

Investigators established that the three made explosive devices at an apartment owned by one of them and learned to stage terrorist attacks from the authors of a foreign extremist Web site.

"Having gained experience online, the terrorists planned to attack the regional police station building and replace a Russian flag on the roof with a Jihad flag. They pleaded guilty," the court said.

The trial took place behind closed doors. The men's sentences have not yet come into force.
