Restaurateur killed in clash with police in St. Petersburg - report
ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 23 (Interfax) - Russia's Investigative Committee is looking into a gun incident in St. Petersburg on Tuesday in which a businessman was shot dead and a policeman wounded.
In describing the incident, the committee's branch for St. Petersburg said a woman had told police in a phone call to them that a man who she did not know had forced her into an apartment, had raped her there and was keeping her inside by force.
"When a police detail arrived at the address that was stated, A. Rasulov, year of birth 1977, entered the stairwell and opened fire on the police, using an airgun. With return fire from his service gun, a detective from Police Station No. 76 wounded the [gunman], who died on the spot," the branch said in a statement.
The detective, who had been wounded, was hospitalized.
Breaking down the door of the apartment from which the phone call had come, the police found the woman caller and the gunman's brother, Akif Rasulov, inside.
"In examining the apartment, physical evidence was found of a possible sex-related crime against the [woman] and a substance of vegetable origin, possibly a narcotic," the statement said.
A law enforcement source told Interfax the gunman had been director of the Kish-Mish restaurant chain.
