Vitali Klitschko hints he may run for Kyiv mayor

KYIV. Nov 1 (Interfax) - The UDAR party will put forward its candidate for mayor of Kyiv, its leader, world heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, said on Thursday, hinting that he might run for the post.

"When the date is named for the elections we will be able to make up our mind and will say clearly who will take part in the elections," Klitschko said.

Asked whether he would run, he said: "I will never neglect the people of Kyiv."

"Today's majority [in the city council] has been put together by Chernovetsky [ex-mayor Leonid Chernovetsky].," Klitschko said. "I'm sure that very soon elections for city mayor should be held - we have no mayor today, unfortunately, - and elections for the Kyiv Council."

Unfinished vote counts after parliamentary elections on October 28 suggest that UDAR has won nearly 14% of votes. Klitschko headed the party's ticket.
