Ukraine harvests 42 mln tonnes of grain from 94% of fields by Nov 5
KYIV. Nov 6 (Interfax) - Ukraine had threshed 42 million tonnes of grain from 13.9 million hectares, or 94% of the area to be harvested in the country, as of November 5, 2012, the press service of the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry has reported.
According to the ministry, the average yield was 30.3 centners (a metric centner equals 100 kilograms, or 220.46 pounds) per hectare, while on the same date last year it was 35.8 centners per hectare.
In addition, farmers threshed 15.7 million tonnes of corn from 3.6 million hectares, or 81% of the target. The average yield of that crop was 44 centners per hectare, whereas on the same date last year it was 59.8 centners per hectare.
Farmers also harvested 2.2 million tonnes of soybeans from 1.3 million hectares (91% of the area), with its average yield being 16.5 centners per hectare, compared to 20.4 centners per hectare last year.
Sugar beets had been harvested from 388,000 hectares, or 85% of the area. Farmers harvested 14.8 million tonnes of sugar beet, with the average yield being 381 centners per hectare, against 359 centners per hectare last year.
