Anti-corruption efforts are not just showcase - Putin's spokesman

MOSCOW. Nov 10 (Interfax) - Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has dismissed the opposition's claims that anti-corruption measures the government has been taking lately are just a showcase to distract the people's attention from economic and other problems.

"Some allegations that the recent high-profile corruption cases are aimed at distracting the people's attention are absurd and can hardly be explained. President Putin has consistently emphasized priority of the fight against corruption," Peskov told Interfax on Saturday.

"Putin did this in his previous presidential terms, he did this when he was prime minister, he declared this as a priority in his presidential election platform, and he is doing this now. There is no doubt he will be continuing to do this," Peskov said.

"Practical steps to counter corruption are being taken all the time on the entire territory of Russia," he said.

"The hints that this is just some campaign are groundless. This is consistent everyday work," Peskov said.
