NATO presence in Afghanistan after 2014 should be guided by intl law - Russian envoy to NATO

BRUSSELS. Nov 30 (Interfax) - Russia will fully fulfill its obligations under Resolution 1386 of the UN Security Council as regards its cooperation with NATO in Afghanistan, but is Russian envoy to NATO Alexander Grushko said.

"It's an important question because there is no other foundation for cooperation between Russia and NATO, and we are operating under the assumption that it is in the interests of NATO to ensure that its further presence in Afghanistan take place within international law and is in line with the state purpose of stabilizing the situation in the country," Grushko told Russian journalists in Brussels on Friday.

"We follow that closely and we are working on the assumption that the Afghan issue will become permanent, both in NATO-Russia Council meetings and in the work of specialized bodies of this council," he said.
