Head of St. Pete energy committee resigns

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 30 (Interfax) - Head of the St. Petersburg committee for energy and service lines Vladislav Petrov has written a letter of resignation.

"He wrote a letter of resignation today. He is in his office, he is on the job still," Interfax was told at the press service of the committee on Friday.

A committee official said that the letter was sent to city governor Georgy Poltavchenko for approval.

On Thursday Petrov was summoned to the city police as a witness in a case of fraud in the housing and utilities' sector of the city.

Earlier the police stopped the illegal operations of an organized group that is suspected of embezzling funds from the St. Petersburg city budget. The damage to state coffers is estimated at 3 billion rubles.

The Interior Ministry press service reported that 18 million rubles, $100,000 and 100,000 euro in cash were seized in Petrov's apartment alone.

A criminal case of fraud was launched. Four suspects in the case have been taken to Moscow under armed escort.

St. Petersburg city officials as well as the founders and executives of several commercial entities are suspected of illegal operations.
