Two suspected militants killed in Makhachkala - NAC

MOSCOW. Dec 1 (Interfax) - Two men suspected of belonging to illegal armed units have been killed in the community of Semender in Makhachkala, Dagestan.

"Security agencies received information indicating that active members of the so-called Gimry group responsible for numerous grave crimes, including murders, were staying in a private house in the community of Semender, the Kirovsky district of Makhachkala," the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) reported on Saturday.

To ensure security of the nearby houses, the operational headquarters decided to blockade the area and impose a counterterrorist operation regime on it. "At 8:40 a.m., the territory adjacent to the house was blockaded by security forces. The thugs attempted to break through the cordon by firing automatic weapons at the commandos. They were neutralized by response fire," the NAC said.

The militants have been preliminarily identified as Omargadzhi Ibragimov, born in 1976, and Kuldu Kulduyev, Ibragimov's personal bodyguard, born in 1975, both coming from the village of Khindakh, the Gunib district. Ibragimov, known by the nickname Umar of Khindakh, went underground last winter and was earlier convicted for illegal storage of weapons. Kulduyev was on the federal wanted list, the NAC said.

According to information possessed by the operational headquarters in Dagestan, these people are responsible for a number of high-profile terrorist crimes. "They belonged to an organized criminal group specializing on extorting large sums of money numbering hundreds of millions of rubles from businessmen and abducting businessmen. The thugs killed those who refused to pay the tribute. In addition, they planned and organized attacks on members of law enforcement agencies and special services," it said.

Two assault rifles, several magazines for them, and a significant amount of ammunition were found at the scene of the clash.

None of civilians or members of law enforcement agencies and special services was injured, the NAC said.
