India could build two hydro-power plants in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE. Dec 11 (Interfax) - India's Khoday Group of Industries will consider building two hydropower plants, overall capacity 100 MW, in Tajikistan, Tajikistan's Energy and Industry Ministry said.

Tajik Energy and Industry Minister Gul Sherali and Sri Hari Khoday, CEO of Khoday Group, signed a memorandum in Dushanbe.

"Khoday Group of Industries will develop a feasibility study for projects to build a 150 MW hydropower plant on the Fondaryo River in the Ayni district, Sughd province, and a 850 MW plant on the Obi Khingob River in eastern Tajikistan," the ministry said.

"The company has major plans to work with Tajikistan, above all in hydropower, the construction of power plants, mining and processing and poultry farming," the ministry said.

A ministry official told Interfax that the Indian company could build the plants via its subsidiary Khoday L.K.Power, but he did not say how much the projects might cost as the feasibility study was not yet ready.

The Fondaryo is a tributary of the River Zeravshan, which is common to both Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Obi Khingob is a tributary of the Vakhs, which is itself the largest tributary of the Amu Darya.
