Russia to get qualitatively new missiles by 2018 - RVSN commander

MOSCOW. Dec 14 (Interfax-AVN) - The share of new missile systems in the arsenal of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces will keep growing and reach 98% by 2021, RVSN Commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev told journalists on Friday.

"At the turn of 2018-2020, we expect to receive qualitatively new missile systems equipped with combat technologies capable of overpowering any missile defense shield that could be created by that time," the commander said.

"Possibilities will also appear until then to enlarge the composition of the main attack force to a certain extent under force majeure circumstances," he said.

"Plans for the RVSN group's development for the coming decade include giving this group advanced missile silo-based and mobile systems," the general said.

"The main attack force will remain two-component and keep its stationary missile systems, which have high operational readiness, and highly survivable mobile systems," he said.

Today RVSN has approximately two-thirds of strategic nuclear delivery vehicles and more than one half of the Russian strategic nuclear forces' weapons.

"In accordance with earlier decisions adopted, RVSN continues developing as a self-contained element of the Russian Armed Forces," Karakayev said.
