Russia's response to U.S. Magnitsky Act will be proportionate, not excessive - diplomat
MOSCOW. Dec 14 (Interfax) - Russia's reaction to the adoption of the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012 by the United States should be proportionate and not excessive, since Moscow values interaction with the United States, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.
"The president's remark that we do not consider it appropriate to react excessively is quite understandable: we value our strategic interaction with the United States. Therefore, our response even to this unfriendly step should be proportionate to what is happening in our relations," Lukashevich said at a news briefing in Moscow on Friday.
At the same time, Lukashevich stressed that Moscow regrets the U.S. move.
"We are trying to understand the reason why the accumulated capital of Russian-U.S. relations is being sacrificed. This question is perhaps not for us but for the lawmakers who have started all this action," he said.
