EU is not unanimous about recognition of Syrian opposition - Chizhov

MOSCOW. Dec 18 (Interfax) - The European Union is not unanimous about the recognition of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as a lawful representative of the Syrian people, Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said.

"We know that the latest meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council had a long debate on whether or not to recognize the group of the Syrian opposition, which had presented itself as a lawful representative of the Syrian people. It seems the EU is not unanimous," he said in the Moscow-Brussels videoconference on Tuesday.

"The Syrian opposition is patchy and some of its members are directly related to international terrorism; so caution exercised by the EU may be quite grounded at the current stage," the diplomat added.

He noted that Syria would be on the agenda of the Russia-EU Brussels summit of December 21.
