Powerful bomb defused in Dagestan, another one explodes meanwhile - spokesman

MAKHACHKALA, Russia. Dec 18 (Interfax) - Bomb disposal experts defused an improvised bomb as powerful as 27 kilograms of TNT planted on a country road in the Dagestan republic in Russia's North Caucasus on Tuesday, but meanwhile another bomb went off 200 meters away from them though no one was hurt, the Operations Headquarters said.

"The explosive device that was found by the side of the road leading to Chontaul [a village in the Kizilyurt district] was a gas cylinder filled with a mix of ammonia nitrate and aluminum powder and with shrapnel," an Operations Headquarters spokesman told Interfax.

The bomb had "a detonator based on the Tomahawk car burglary alarm system" and had "an estimated power equivalent to that of 25 kilograms of TNT," he said.

While the experts were finishing their work, one more improvised bomb exploded 200 meters away. It had the power of 7 kilograms of TNT, the spokesman said. "There is suspicion that it was detonated with a signal from a mobile phone for hitting the cordon of FSB operatives and police," he said. "Fortunately, no one was hurt by the explosion."
