Women won't be conscripted in Russia - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Dec 24 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry has no plans to conscript women, the Defense Ministry's press service and information department told Interfax-AVN.

"Throughout all of Russian history, military service by conscription as a duty and obligation concerned primarily men. The only exception was the beginning of the Great Patriotic War," when thousands of women were mobilized and sent to serve in the army and work in the rear, the source said.

At the same time, the source reiterated that there are no obstacles to women who want to serve in the army.

"Women can serve in the army now. Some 50,000 women now serve in the Armed Forces in all arms and branches of troops, of which some 3,000 are officers, including 28 colonels and one major-general, and over 46,000 sergeants and privates," the ministry official said.

All female service people serve in the army under contract," he said.
