Novaya Gazeta initiates collection of signatures for early dissolution of State Duma

MOSCOW. Dec 24 (Interfax) - The Web site of Novaya Gazeta has begun collecting signatures in favor of dissolving the State Duma, which has postponed the consideration of 100,000 signatures against the law banning foreigners from adopting Russian orphans, which were collected on the Novaya Gazeta Web site and provided to the parliament.

"The parliamentarians decided to postpone your votes. They signed the law in haste and left for warmer countries. They are saying it's 'a regulation.' It's not 'a regulation.' It's deception. We are beginning to collect signatures for the early dissolution of the State Duma," the paper said in a statement posted on its Web site on Monday.

"Our signatures will be provided to the Russian president and the Central Elections Commission (with statements on behalf of the people who voted for a national referendum) on February 1. One hundred thousand deputies have ignored them. If we get 500,000 [signatures], we will ignore them," Novaya Gazeta reported.

The paper believes "Russian citizens should have the right to initiate the expression of no confidence in the State Duma, and the president has a duty to heed this motion."

Commenting on the action, Novaya Gazeta press officer Nadezhda Prusenkova told Interfax that "the voting scale is very big." "We even have to use additional technical resources to ensure that our Web site continues operation with such a high number of visits."
