Kalashnikov is in hospital, he had problem with swollen limbs - aide

IZHEVSK. Dec 25 (Interfax) - The legendary small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov is in hospital but he is alright, his aide Nikolai Shklyayev told Interfax on Tuesday.

"His [Kalashnikov's] son said he was in intensive care," the aide said.

Shklyayev said quoting the designer's son that the hospital stay is not related to Kalashnikov's heart problems but swollen limbs.

"I contacted the driver, he said: everything is alright with us," the aide said adding that Kalashnikov was taken to hospital last Thursday.

Udmurtian Health Minister Vladimir Muzlov announced that even though Kalashnikov had health problems, now the situation is normal.

"There were certain problems," he said to Interfax responding to a request to comment on reports that Kalashnikov was taken to intensive care in a hospital in Udmurtia.

"The situation is normal, stable," he noted.

Meanwhile, a source in Udmurtian government bodies said he had heard nothing about Kalashnikov having serious health problems. He said he is in constant touch with the family on any issues.

"But I did not get any calls of this kind," the source said.

Mikhail Kalashnikov was born on November 10, 1919. He became world famous thanks to inventing the Kalashnikov assault rifle.
