New RGTEU rector complains to police about obstruction
MOSCOW. Dec 26 (Interfax) - The new rector of the Russian State University of Trade and Economics (RGTEU), Andrei Shklyayev, has complained to the police after he was prevented from entering the university, Interfax was told at the Moscow police press service.
"The new RGTEU rector filed a complaint to the Northern District interior department on being prevented from proceeding to his work place in the university building," a press officer said.
He added that a probe is being conducted in relation to the complaint. In addition, the police continue to monitor public order near the university.
Earlier reports said that Shklyayev was prevented from entering his office and that students continue to regard Sergei Baburin as their rector.
"The strike will continue. We continue to regard Baburin as our rector. We should not give in now," representative of the university's student council Albert Zaripov said to Interfax.
He added that students continue to demand the cancellation of the order on reorganizing the university and the results of monitoring by the Education and Science Ministry.
Zaripov did not rule out that the strike will continue after New Year.
"We are ready to recognize that we need reorganization, if this is proved by lawful documents," he said.
An Interfax correspondent reports that Shklyayev and Deputy Education and Science Minister Alexander Klimov approached the university to hand in orders on Baburin's dismissal and the appointment of the new rector but striking students did not let them to the office.
Earlier on Tuesday it was reported that the Russian Education and Science Ministry appointed Andrei Shklyayev as the RGTEU rector. Deputy Education and Science Minister Alexander Klimov read out an ordinance dismissing Rector Sergei Baburin and appointing Shklyayev to the position at a meeting with university students.
On November 1, the Education and Science Ministry published a list of about two dozen higher educational institutions it rated as ineffective after monitoring 541 state universities and 994 affiliates.
The RGTEU was among those on the list.
The students had a strike on December 18-20. The strike was suspended while students hoped for a decision of the national administration about the university future.
The Education and Science Ministry decided to attach the RGTEU to the Russian Plekhanov University of Economics.
RGTEU students and professors refused to recognize the ministry's decision.
