"Zelenograd maniac" makes confession - Russian Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. Dec 27 (Interfax) - The 25-year-old Muscovite detained on suspicion of attacking women has made a confession, spokesman of the Russian Investigative Committee Moscow department Sergei Stukalov told Interfax on Thursday.

"Under the weight of evidence the suspect made a confession about crimes he had been perpetrating since 2006," Stukalov said.

A number of DNA tests and identifications will be done to verify his testimony.

"The suspect will be indicted soon. Detectives have appealed for his arrest," Stukalov said.

Sixteen criminal cases opened under Article 131 of the Russian Criminal Code (rape) and Article 132 (sexual violence) have been merged into one, he said.

According to the detectives, the man attacked young women, mostly in elevators, and raped them in 2006-2012. There 16 victims in all, one of them a minor.

Stukalov refused to name the suspect. He said that would complicate the identification.

A police source told Interfax earlier that a suspected assailant of women had been detained in Zelenograd. Several street cameras caught a glimpse of the assailant, and his description was published on several Web sites.

"A man called the police yesterday to report that a driver who looked like the "Zelenograd maniac" was working at a nearby office. A team of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department detained the suspect," the source said.

The police suspect him of over 50 attacks on women in Zelenograd, Mitino and Tushino.
