AES to invest $42 mln in repair of two HPPs in Kazakh next year
SEMEI. Dec 27 (Interfax) - U.S. corporation AES plans to invest 6.3 billion tenge ($41.86 million at the current exchange rate) next year in the repair and modernization of equipment at the Ust-Kamenogorsk and Shulbin Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPP) in Kazakhstan, AES said in a statement.
Projects to repair, reconstruct and modernize equipment at the HPPs will help boost safety at the facilities and ensure the reliability of electricity supply to consumers in Eastern Kazakhstan, and the entire country, the statement said.
The Ust-Kamenogorsk and Shulbin HPPs were transferred to AES' operations in 1997.
Ust-Kamenogorsk HPP was designed based on the DneproHPP. Construction of the station started in 1939 and the first hydro unit was launched in December 1952. The HPP has four units each with 82.8 MWt in capacity.
The construction of the Shulbin HPP commenced in 1976. The launch of the first hydro unit took place in December 23, 1987. The station now has six hydro units each with 117 MWt in capacity.
AES has been operating in Kazakhstan since 1996. The corporation produces and distributes electricity and heat.
