Prospective torpedoes for Navy to be produced by late 2016

MOSCOW. Jan 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Fifth-generation torpedo Lomonos will be developed and produced for the Russian Navy in four years, a source in the defense industry told Interfax-AVN on Sunday.

"We plan fifth generation torpedoes Fizik, produce small-sized anti-boat torpedoes, fifth generation torpedoes Lomonos, and a hydroacoustic suppression code Berilliy using a torpedo carrier before the end of 2017," the source said.

Some torpedoes, in particular, Fizik-1 or product 2534, were ready five years ago, but are still no being used by the Russian Navy, despite the appearance of Fifik-2 with a new engine.

The source believes that is happening because torpedoes are often made without regard for the capacity and purpose of new vessels built for the Navy.

"Domestic producers of torpedo weapons now have to work blindly, without regard for the needs of the Russian fleet. As a result, there is a risk that the vessels that are being built and modernized may be left without modern torpedo weapons," he said.

The source said Russian weapons producers currently have to produce obsolete torpedoes, which were developed back in the 1980s.

In Russia, torpedo weapons are produced by seven enterprises, of which six are part of OAO Concern Sea Underwater Weapons - Gidropribor.
