Russian Justice Ministry cannot say definitely whether Agora is foreign agent - activist
MOSCOW. Jan 9 (Interfax) - The Russian Justice Ministry has not decided whether to regard human rights activists from the Agora association as foreign agents, head Pavel Chikov twitted on Wednesday.
In his micro blog he posted a copy of a letter of First Deputy Justice Minister Alexander Smirnov saying: "Based on the information you submitted it is impossible to draw a definite conclusion whether the interregional association of human rights organizations Agora performs the functions of a foreign agent."
On November 20, 2012 a law came into force on NGOs engaged in political activities and financed from aboard. The law assigns them the status of foreign agents and binds them to be duly registered at the Justice Ministry.
Interfax has not obtained a commentary from the ministry on the matter yet.
