Ukrainian Rada ratifies agreement with Russia on dealing with emergencies at Black Sea Fleet sites

KYIV. Jan 11 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada has ratified an agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Russia on interaction in preventing emergencies, including fires, and dealing with their aftermath in communities hosting Russian Black Sea Fleet sites on Ukrainian territory.

The decision was supported by 228 out of the 248 parliamentarians registered at the session hall on Friday.

An explanatory note to the agreement says that it sets common principles and a framework of cooperation in preventing emergency situations, dealing with their aftermath, and providing mutual assistance if an emergency situation occurs on Ukrainian territory.

Opposition members protested the agreement, claiming that it legitimizes Russian legal standards on Ukrainian territory.

The Ukrainian and Russian governments signed the agreement on July 12, 2012.
