Lavrov condemns attempts to accuse Damascus of Aleppo terror act

DUSHANBE. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has dismissed claims that explosions at a university campus in Aleppo were allegedly staged by Syria's pro-government forces as "sacrilegious".

"I saw footage on CNN alleging that the terrorist attack was staged by pro-government forces. In my opinion, it is sacrilege to the utmost degree," Lavrov said at a press conference in the Tajik capital Dushanbe on Thursday.

Asked whether or not these different interpretations of the Aleppo events could effect relations between Russia and the United States, the minister said he does "not understand how a terrorist attack is able to cause disagreements."

The explosions in Aleppo have been characterized as a terrorist attack by the leaders of many states and the United Nations, Lavrov said.
