Ukrainian companies carry 4.7% less freight in 2012

KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Ukrainian transport companies carried 772.8 million tonnes of freight in 2012, 4.9% less than in 2011.

Freight turnover fell 7.6% to 394.6 billion tonne-km, the State Statistics Committee said.

Ukraine's railroads reduced freight haulage by 2.5% to 457.5 million tonnes. Road freight grew 0.1% to 179 million tonnes and river freight fell 21.4% to 7.8 million tonnes.

Commercial and fishing ports, and industrial docks handled 160.6 million tonnes of cargo, 0.6% less than in 2011. Air freight rose 24.7% to 114,900 tonnes.

Trunk pipelines carried 128.1 million tonnes, 17.1% less than a year earlier, as shipments of oil fell 31.7% and gas - 14.6%, while ammonia was up 2.2%. Oil, gas and ammonia transit fell 18.1%, 19.1% and 1.8%, respectively.

Passenger transport fell 2.4% last year to 6.8 billion passengers and passenger turnover fell 1.2% to 132.5 billion passenger-km.

Railways carried 429.5 million passengers, as in 2011, and automobiles - 3.5 billion, down 4.5%.

River and sea vessels carried 6.6 million passengers, down 7.2%. Air transport carried 8.1 million, up 8%, and urban electric transport - 2.9 billion, down 0.1%.
