Russian premier demands harsher penalty for drunk-driving
GORKI, Moscow region. Jan 22 (Interfax) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has called on the State Duma to make drunk-driving laws more stringent.
"In any case, I have always believed that parliament should produce a tougher version of this document," Medvedev said at a meeting with members of parliamentary factions.
During the meeting, the premier also proposed discussing laws that regulate the federal contract system and migration policy.
"I would like to remind you that when the State Duma appointed me as head of government, I promised to hold working meetings at this level, along with working meetings on constitution-linked reports and the government's reports," Medvedev said. The prime minister said that he has regularly met with parliamentary faction leaders calling for meetings in a broader format.
"The number of such meetings has grown somewhat since the new government started to work last year. The time has come to speak about life and our plans. But before we do so I would like to note that the legislative work of the government and the State Duma was productive last year," Medvedev said.
More than half the bills signed by the president into law last year were submitted by the government, he said.
