Medvedev: Russia did not ban adoption of children by foreigners

DAVOS. Jan 23 (Interfax) - Russia has not banned the adoption of children by foreigners, but the problem should be better addressed in Russia itself, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.

"I have my standing in this topic, and it is clear and simple. We should do everything for our orphans, children who do not have parents, get their parents in Russia, get healthcare in Russia, and if they are left in the [orphans] houses so that they would have the good conditions for their growth and healthcare," Medvedev said in an interview with Bloomberg TV in Davos on Wednesday.

"We do not forbid the foreign adoption. And foreign adoption is not only adoption by the U.S. citizens," he said.

"But if we speak about this problem on the whole it would be good of all of these questions to be solved within our state as it is happening in most developed economies," Medvedev stressed.

"We should work for our children to feel all right in our country and I think that is a noble cause," he concluded.
