Vologda escaped convict gets 24 years in jail

VOLOGDA. Jan 28 (Interfax) - A court in Vologda sentenced Alexei Shestakov, who escaped from prison in the town of Sheksna by helicopter in March 2012, to 24 years in jail, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

Prosecutors had requested 30 years in a high security prison given Shestakov's previous criminal record.

Shestakov was found guilty on several counts, including "hijacking an aircraft," "escape from prison," and "attempted violence against an official."

His two accessories were also convicted. Alexander Rusanov got 12 years at a high-security correctional prison and Tatyana Vazhalina 11 years in a general prison.

Reports said earlier that Shestakov attempted an escape by helicopter after serving half of his 24-year term. The runaway inmate and his two accessories were detained on the same day.
