Russian naval group in Mediterranean to be disbanded - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Tactical exercises of the Russian Navy in the eastern Mediterranean involving ships of the North, Baltic and Black Sea Fleets will end within days and the naval group will be disbanded, a representative of the Russian Defense Ministry press service and information department for the Navy told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

"The naval group will be disbanded within several days and ships of the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets will return to their bases on the Russian territory," the source said.

Once the exercises are over, the unit of North Fleet ships led by the large anti-sub ship Severomorsk will head for the Suez Canal, he said. In the second half of February, the unit will replace Pacific Fleet ships led by the large anti-sub ship Marshal Shaposhnikov protecting civilian vessels from sea pirates along the Somali coastline.
