UN Security Council has no plans for new Syrian resolution - senior Russian diplomat

MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax) - The UN Security Council is not considering any new resolution on Syria, a senior Russian diplomat said on Wednesday, arguing that it was "a great mistake" on the part of the council to stop short of approving the Action Group's Geneva communique of June 2012.

"I don't think that work will start at the UN Security Council on a new resolution under the current circumstances. It isn't being discussed yet," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told Interfax.

"The council has already passed a set of important decisions. When we proposed that the Geneva communique of the Action Group should be approved at the Security Council, some of the members of the council didn't support our idea. I believe that this was a great mistake," he said.

Gatilov said the communique sets the philosophy and key points for seeking a solution to the Syrian crisis.

"As regards the role of the UN Security Council in the Syrian conflict settlement process, I would like to point out that the council is closely monitoring the situation in Syria and is still up to the responsibilities set to it by the UN Charter.
