Russian diplomat hails French protests against same-sex marriages law
MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry's commissioner for human rights, democracy and rule of law has hailed protests in France against President Francois Hollande's initiative to legalize same-sex marriages and permit same-gender couples to adopt children, and said the protests mean "Christian values are alive" in the country.
"There's opposition in France to the legalization of same-sex marriages. Christian values are alive despite Western neo-liberalism!" Konstantin Dolgov tweeted on Thursday.
Civil same-sex partnerships are permitted in France.
Hollande's initiative has sparked demonstrations both by opponents and by supporters of it.
French magazine Nouvel Observateur published the findings of a survey in which 56% of respondents expressed support for the legalization of gay marriage and 50% rejected the idea of child adoptions by same-gender couples.
In Russia, a draft law to ban homosexual propaganda among minors passed the first reading in the State Duma late last week. The United States and some Western European countries have criticized the bill.
