Russia to oppose sanctions harmful for trade, economic cooperation with DPRK

MOSCOW. Feb 19 (Interfax) - UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea should not exceed non-proliferation purposes. Russia will deny support to any means of pressure on Pyongyang, which will harm bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

"Any measures of pressure on North Korea should be limited to nuclear and missile non-proliferation. We will object to sanctions, which may harm normal trade and economic relations with North Korea," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told a press conference in Moscow.

"The goal is to resume the six-nation negotiations. We insist on a political and diplomatic settlement of the problem," the diplomat stressed.

"We view everything that exceeds non-proliferation goals as matters beyond the UN reaction. Naturally, we will watch out to prevent damage to our interests," the deputy minister said.
