Ukraine leader calls for "compromises" with EU on Tymoshenko-Lutsenko issue
WISLA, Poland. Feb 21 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has called for "compromises" between Ukraine and the European Union on the issue of Ukraine's jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and ex-Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko.
"As regards the painful issue of Tymoshenko and Lutsenko, I would like to say once again, to confirm, that we can understand very well that this issue belongs solely to the category of law," Yanukovych said in a press statement after a meeting with the Polish and Slovak presidents, Bronislaw Komorowski and Ivan Gasparovic, in Wisla on Thursday.
Ukraine has a "serious understanding" for the EU's stance on the issue, Yanukovych said. "Sharing these difficulties and our friends' anxiety, we realize that reaching compromises and looking for solutions is one of the immediate tasks to be carried out," he said.
