Sukhumi stays committed to Geneva discussions despite flaws - President Ankvab

SUKHUMI. Feb 22 (Interfax) - Abkhazia's President Alexander Ankvab has spoken in favor of continuing the Geneva-based discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia.

"We will continue these negotiations, even though we do not always like what has been taking place in Geneva," he said at a meeting with UN Ambassador Antti Turunen, who co-chairs the Geneva discussions.

Turunen, for his part, reiterated the importance of the Geneva consultations for discussing security issues.

The situation in Abkhazia's Gali district and the republic as a whole is improving, he said.

"Cooperation between Abkhazia and the UN has been concrete and productive over all these years," Ankvab said.

"The UN mission in Abkhazia requires qualitative improvements in terms of providing significant economic aid," he said.

"Both Abkhazia and lots of other countries were unable to cope with the aftermath of war acting on their own," Ankvab said.

"Russia has been helping us extensively, but we would like to see aid on the same scale from international organizations as well," the Abkhaz president said.
