Moscow urges Barzani to keep working on non-confrontational inter-Iraqi dialogue

MOSCOW. Feb 22 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry website reports.

"Sergei Lavrov called on the Kurdistan leader to continue playing a constructive role in the establishment of a non-confrontational inter-Iraqi dialogue for settling disagreements and achieving the soonest stabilization in the country," the report said.

The minister reaffirmed the need to abandon "ultimatums and irreconcilable positions" in the settlement of conflicts in Iraq and the Middle East.

Syria was another issue discussed by the Russian and Iraqi representatives.

"Lavrov reaffirmed the principled opinion of Russia that there was no alternative to negotiations between the SAR government and the opposition on the basis of the Geneva Communique of the Action Group of June 30, 2012," the ministry said.
