Kyrgyz president counts on Japanese assistance for economic stabilization

OSAKA. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Japan may assist in funding construction of motorways and bridges and border reinforcement in Kyrgyzstan.

"Japan will continue to help us promote democracy and strengthen the economy. It is of paramount importance that support has been expressed at every meeting," Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev told reporters on Thursday with regard to his official visit to Japan.

He affirmed the broadening geography of visits of Kyrgyz leaders and said "Kyrgyz officials were invited and received by major countries of the world."

The visit resulted in the Japanese decision to allot funds "for building a bridge across a border river in southern Kyrgyzstan, strengthening border protection and infrastructure and constructing a new road to link southern and northern Kyrgyzstan," the president said.

Kyrgyzstan and Japan will resume yen loans. The loans will be granted for strategic projects on preferential terms, he said.

Besides, Japan supports the Kyrgyz idea of opening regular air traffic.

Asked about reasons for support by world powers, Atambayev said, "Kyrgyzstan is a unique country; it is the heart of Central Asia. We are building democracy and will not deviate from this path."

"Different countries have different regimes, different rules and different administrative systems; some have presidential form of government and others have parliamentary form, but Kyrgyzstan will not deviate from the path of parliamentary democracy, it will interact with various countries and honor its commitments," the president said.

"It is possible to work and reach agreements with Kyrgyzstan and every country is interesting in doing that," he said.
