Aktau seaport handles 6% more cargo in January-February

ALMATY. March 4 (Interfax) - Aktau International Commercial Seaport handled 2.005 million tons of cargo in the first two months of 2013, a year-on-year increase of 6%, the company said.

The transshipment of crude oil and oil products in January-February rose by 18% to 1.501 million tonnes, metal products, on the contrary, fell 35.7% to 143,200 million tonnes.

Grain handling during the period was 19.4% down at 89,500 tonnes, ferry cargo transshipment fell 13.2% to 207,000 tonnes. The handling of other cargoes increased 34% to 63,600 tonnes.

The port was visited by 312 vessels during the two months, down from 337 in January-February 2012.

The state-run Aktau International Commercial Seaport transshipped 10.950 million tonnes of cargo last year, 9.5% less than the year before.

The Aktau seaport is situated on the Mangyshlak peninsula. It is of strategic importance to Kazakhstan, being the country's only seaport.
