Prosecutors must staunchly resist extremism - Putin

MOSCOW. March 5 (Interfax) - The rate of extremist crime rose by 12% in Russia in 2012, which suggests that prosecutors must react more resolutely to all manifestations of extremism, said President Vladimir Putin.

"Countering extremism must remain within the field of your vision all the time. Extremist crime rate went up almost 12% last year, compared to 2011," Putin told senior officials of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Some of the radical groups are extremely aggressive, he said. "They hold public rallies, spread criminal ideas via the Internet and openly recruit supporters. It is your direct duty to react instantly to attempts to incite ethnic and religious enmity, and to popularize xenophobia and chauvinism," the president said.

Prosecutors must be guided by the law, reject the double standards practice and remain unbiased, he said.
