CSTO, NATO to jointly fight threats, challenges from Afghanistan - Russian General Staff

MOSCOW. March 6, 2013 - The Russian General Staff urges the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) to cooperate in fighting threats and challenges coming from Afghanistan, Head of the Russian General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, said on Wednesday.

"We think it's necessary to seek the coordination of the CSTO and NATO efforts to fight challenges and threats coming from Afghanistan. Thus, the CSTO role in providing international security in the Central Asian region will only grow," Gerasimov said on Wednesday speaking to foreign military attaches in Moscow.

The military and political situation in Central Asia could get considerably more complicated after the withdrawal of the international forces providing security in Afghanistan in 2014, Gerasimov said.

"This can't help but bother Russia and its allies in the region," the general said.
