Nearly one third of Kyiv residents willing to vote in mayoral elections back Klitschko - poll
KYIV. March 13 (Interfax) - Nearly one third of Kyiv residents willing to cast their ballots in mayoral elections if such were held in March would vote for Vitaly Klitschko, the reigning WBC heavyweight world champion and leader of the UDAR party, the rating sociological group reported based on a telephone public opinion poll of 1,060 respondents it conducted on February 25 to March 6, 2013.
The poll showed that, if mayoral elections in Kyiv were held in early March 2013, about 55% of the eligible voters would go to polling stations, and 31% of them would vote for Klitschko, 20.3% for incumbent head of the Kyiv city administration Oleksandr Popov, and 7% for parliamentarian Petro Poroshenko.
The poll showed that the share of Klitschko supporters is larger among younger voters.
If Klitschko and Popov proceeded to a hypothetical second round of mayoral elections, 60.4% of the respondents determined to vote would cast their ballots for Klitschko, 26.5% for Popov, and 13.1% are undecided.
The poll also showed that 35% of the respondents would like to see Klitschko as Kyiv mayor and 37% leader of the UDAR faction at the Verkhovna Rada. On the other hand, 15% would not like him to be either Kyiv mayor or parliamentary faction leader and 13% are undecided.
The margin of error in the poll is within 3.1% for figures close to 50%, within 2.8%, for figures close to 30%, and within 2% for figures close to 10%.
The Verkhovna Rada governance system and local self-government committee recommended on March 7 that the Rada schedule Kyiv mayoral elections and elections of Kyiv City Council deputies for June 2, 2013.
