Money transfers from Russia to Tajikistan up 15% in 2012
DUSHANBE. March 19 (Interfax) - Net money transfers from Russia to Tajikistan grew by 14.9% to $3.29 billion in 2012, the National Bank of Tajikistan said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gross money transfers from Russia, made primarily by migrant workers, grew 21.1% to $3.651 billion in 2012. Transfers from Tajikistan to Russia jumped 140% to $361 million.
Net money transfers from Russia amounted to 43.3% of Tajikistan's GDP in 2012, compared to 43.9% in 2011, the central bank said.
The ratio of money transfers to GDP in Tajikistan is the highest in the world, the World Bank said in a report issued last November. Net money transfers to the Central Asian country from Russia rose to $2.864 billion in 2011 from $2.132 billion in 2010, when they amounted to 37.8% of GDP.
About 1.03 million Tajik citizens work in Russia on a permanent basis, according to Tajikistan's migration service. Tajikistan has a population of 8 million.
