Russia, NATO to discuss establishing arms repair bases in Afghanistan at conference in Moscow

MOSCOW. March 27 (Interfax) - Russian Defense Ministry executives and NATO representatives will discuss establishing a number of bases to repair arms and military equipment in Afghanistan, Sergei Koshelev, director of the Russian Defense Ministry's Department for International Military Cooperation, told reporters on Wednesday.

The discussion will be held at the conference on military and political aspects of European security, which will be held in Moscow on May 23-24.

"We will consider ways to establish repair bases in Afghanistan," Koshelev said.

The issue of maintaining arms and military equipment of the Afghan forces remains an important aspect, Koshelev said.

Any aggravation of the situation in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of NATO forces in 2014 could have a negative impact on the security of Russia as well as a number of other European countries, Koshelev said.
