Russian, Venezuelan fisheries sectors to resume cooperation

MOSCOW. April 3 (Interfax) - Russia's Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) and Venezuela's Socialist Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Insopesca) have decided to resume cooperation.

During a meeting in Caracas this month of the fisheries subgroup of the Russian-Venezuelan High-Level Intergovernmental Commission, Rosrybolovstvo and Insopesca decided to reactivate a memorandum of understanding between them that was signed on April 2, 2010, and was in effect for one year, Rosrybolovstvo spokesman Alexander Savelyev told Interfax.

Moreover, the subgroup considered reviving an agreement on fisheries signed in St. Petersburg on August 15, 2009.

Special emphasis was put on proposals in the meeting for more extensive joint research and exchanges of information and experience between the two countries' fishing industries, Savelyev said.

Both sides advocated more extensive fishing trade between the two countries and decided to consider "direct supplies of Venezuelan fish and seafood to the Russian market," he said.

The spokesman said the commission meeting was of special significance for "friendly relations and strategic partnership" between the two countries.

"In effect, it was the only international event to be held officially by Caracas in the run-up to the presidential election and during the national period of mourning because of the death of the president of the country, Hugo Chavez," Savelyev said.
