Klaipeda Seaport increases freight turnover 19% in Q1

VILNIUS. April 4 (Interfax) - The Klaipeda Seaport boosted cargo handling 19.2% year-on-year to 9.84 million tonnes in January-March 2013, the company told BNS.

In March alone, freight turnover soared 24% to 3.71 million tonnes due to a 67% increase in fertilizer handling to 1.325 million tonnes. Transshipment of agricultural products skyrocketed 220% to 318,000 tonnes, 217,500 tonnes of which were grain (up 190%) and 49,800 tonnes of which were soybean meal (up 7.3-fold). The port handled 952,300 tonnes of petroleum products, up 21.3%, whereas peat transshipment dropped 66.7% to 16,100 tonnes.

The Klaipeda Seaport saw cargo turnover fall 3.7% to 35.24 million tonnes in 2012, taking second place among Baltic ports in terms of turnover. The year before, the port was the largest in the Baltics.
