Dutch experience will help Russia adopt single history textbook - Kremlin

MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax) - A single history textbook will be adopted in Russia taking the Dutch experience into account, but it will actually consist of two or three textbooks for various levels, said Olga Vasilyeva, deputy head of the Kremlin Department for Public Projects.

"We are not the first to do this. In fact, instead of one textbook, there will be two or three for various levels," she told a conference of social scientists, titled "Russia's Political System: Tendencies and Prospects," in Moscow on Monday.

The conference was organized by the Civil Society Development Foundation.

The Dutch experience is illustrated in this respect, she said.

"We are studying the Dutch experience," she said, adding that a commission of experts set up in the Netherlands in 2005-08, were asked to name 50 crucial events in the country's history.

"Most of them selected the same events, although emotions initially ran very high. Belgium followed in the Netherlands' footsteps and Britain will follow suit," Vasilyeva said.

"Although, history textbooks formed this way have one serious flaw: they look like a collection of clips. But on the whole, the national textbook project is a good idea," she said.
