90 bln tons of waste amassed in Russia, most of it has no owner - Putin
NOVO-ORARYOVO. April 10 (Interfax) - Some 90 billion tons of waste has been amassed in Russia and most of it has no owner, President Vladimir Putin said at a waste management conference.
"Contemporary Russia amasses approximately 3.5 billion tons of waste each year. Only a quarter of that amount is recycled. The rest is either burned or taken to landfills. If only it was taken to landfills - waste is often discarded. The number of the so-called illegal waste dumps is growing. Russia has accumulated about 90 billion tons of waste. Most of this waste has no owner," Putin said.
