Overdose mortality rate grew in Moscow last year - FSKN

MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax) - Moscow has reported an increase in drug overdose deaths, deputy head of the Moscow city department of the Federal Drug Control Service Alexander Prostokishin said.

"There were almost 8,200 overdose calls for ambulances in 2011 [6,300 of them in Moscow] and 10,700 [8,100 in Moscow] in 2012," he said.

The drug overdose mortality rate enlarged by almost 1.5 times last year: there were 892 deaths in 2011 and almost 1,200 in 2012.

The drug control officer insisted on more intensive preventive efforts, primarily amongst the young.

"We need systemic educational work, which is in short supply so far. We visit many schools and we can see that most of the parents are not prepared to deal with this problem. They do not know drug abuse symptoms or what to do if the trouble comes," Prostokishin said.
